Department of Chemistry

Chemistry is a fundamental discipline that underpins the study of all other basic sciences. The Department of Chemistry is proud of its dedicated faculty, which has demonstrated excellence in all three dimensions of education. Situated on the ground floor of Science Block, the department offers Bachelor's Degree Program, B.Sc. (Chemistry) started in 1967, the postgraduate program, M.Sc. (Chemistry) in 1982, and the research programs thereafter. It is well equipped with four laboratories allotted separately for UG and PG practical classes, two research laboratories, a seminar hall and a library consisting of a large number of textbooks, reference books and journals. Presently the specialization in Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry is extended by the department at the PG level (based on the semester system). Apart from specified branches of chemistry, research programs are also conducted in Environmental chemistry and Water science. The department is coordinated by the HoD (Head of the Department) believes in an interdisciplinary approach to learning and fosters a culture of excellence in consonance with the college. The consensus is obtained through the Departmental Council presided over by the HoD before taking the final approval of the Principal for carrying out the necessary work within the Department. The faculty takes pride in teaching a diverse group of students enrolled in various courses and providing them with practical training as per their curriculum. Seminars, conferences, workshops and invited lectures are organized by the department on regular basis. Our faculty members receive appreciation upon successful completion of the periodically entrusted national academic responsibilities.

A N College Chemistry Department features a unique distinction for having DBT Star College Scheme. The Star College Program acts as a catalyst for strengthening critical thinking and. "hands-on- experiments" at the undergraduate level of basic science. It also promotes exposure visits to research institutes and industries to attract youth into networking and prepare them for the challenges of the future.  Undergraduate chemistry students have been nurtured well to compete at the national and international levels, such as a selection in IISER, IIT, IISc, NIT, CUSB etc. for M.Sc. or integrated PhD programs. Students often find on-campus job selection opportunities. Some of the Postgraduate students have been placed in BARC, DRDO and other institutions of repute.

Faculty members completed projects that received research funding from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYA&S), Ministry of Education (MoE), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), UNICEF, NEERI, etc. Some of them are being worked on. The UNICEF funded ‘Centre for Fluorosis Research’ housed in the department provides technical assistance to the GoB in improving water quality monitoring and mitigating ill effects of water contamination on the health of people in fluorosis endemic districts of Bihar.

Department embraces extension as the third important dimension to discharge its social obligations and duties adequately along with teaching and research. DST sponsored INSPIRE Internship is one of the regular activities of the department, wherein the top 1% of class X students from various boards studying science in classes XI and XII are invited to attend a 5-day camp mentored by stalwarts in science. This program stimulates students' curiosity about science, helps them to think differently and attracts them to take up research careers at an early age.
